Free author event featuring Dr. Chia Youyee Vang

Dr. Chia Youyee Vang reveals the colorful, intricate history of Hmong Minnesotans in her book 'Hmong in Minnesota,' the latest of the People of Minnesota Series of books published by Minnesota Historical Society Press. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Bio: Dr. Chia Youyee Vang is an assistant professor of history at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Her research interest is on Hmong migration and community building efforts. Her teaching interests include the Vietnam War and contemporary Hmong history and culture. She arrived inMinnesota in April 1980 with her parents and siblings.

She is a graduate of Johnson High School in St. Paul and went on to receive her undergraduate degree from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN.

She holds an M.A. degree from the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs/University of Minnesota and a Ph.D. degree in American Studies from the University of Minnesota.

HMONG IN MINNESOTA is part of THE PEOPLE OF MINNESOTA series published by the Minnesota Historical Society Press. The series tells each group's story in a compact, handsomely illustrated, and accessible paperback.

Readers will learn about the group's accomplishments, ethnic organizations,settlement patterns, and occupations.

Each book includes a personal story of one person or family, told through a diary, a letter, or an oral history.
